LAN - (Local Area Network) – A network that is in a single geographical location.
A LAN is made up of:
- Computers and Servers
- Routers and Switches
- Network Cables
- Protocols – Ethernet Protocols, IP, ARP, RARP, DHCP
LANs allow us to share files, applications, and devices like printers.
Sizes of LANs
- SOHO – Small Office / Home Office
- Enterprise – Includes many separate LANs with hundreds of computers and devices
Ethernet is the most common type of LAN
IEEE – (Institute of Electrical and Electric Engineers) – Define many standards for ethernet
CSMA/CD – (Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Detection) – Provides rules for ethernet so that it can send and receive data efficiently.
- Before sending anything listen to see if there is any activity
- If there is no activity then send the data
- A collision occurs when two devices listen at the same time, don’t hear anything, and then send thinking that no one else is sending
- If a collision occurs a back off algorithm is used to send random times of retransmission to the sending devices
