What You Need To Know About Local Area Networks For The CCENT Exam

LAN - (Local Area Network) – A network that is in a single geographical location.

A LAN is made up of:

  • Computers and Servers
  • Routers and Switches
  • Network Cables
  • Protocols – Ethernet Protocols, IP, ARP, RARP, DHCP

LANs allow us to share files, applications, and devices like printers.

Sizes of LANs

  • SOHO – Small Office / Home Office
  • Enterprise – Includes many separate LANs with hundreds of computers and devices

Ethernet is the most common type of LAN

IEEE – (Institute of Electrical and Electric Engineers) – Define many standards for ethernet

CSMA/CD – (Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Detection) – Provides rules for ethernet so that it can send and receive data efficiently.

  1. Before sending anything listen to see if there is any activity
  2. If there is no activity then send the data
  3. A collision occurs when two devices listen at the same time, don’t hear anything, and then send thinking that no one else is sending
  4. If a collision occurs a back off algorithm is used to send random times of retransmission to the sending devices
