7 Great Cisco Engineers to Learn From

There have been several questions that I have always had about getting a college degree and balancing that with getting Cisco Certifications. And since I’m not as experienced as many other people out there I decided to ask the experts what they thought. I was really impressed with their replies and I would love to share them with you. I know this post is long, but please take the time to learn from their wisdom and see how you can apply it to your lives so that you can achieve your dreams in the networking field and become one of the best networking technicians out there. And for those short on time I highlighted some of their words that caught my attention that you can scroll through quickly, but still gain some valuable insight. Read more…

What is the Cisco ICND1 Exam?

The ICND1 Exam is the first out of two tests that you will need to take in order to get your CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate). The CCNA Certification used to be the first certification that you could get from Cisco, but a few years ago they split it up into two tests. You can still take one big test to get your CCNA but I recommend splitting it up and going to the two test route. Read more…

Should I take one big CCNA Exam or take the two test route?

Originally the first Cisco Certification was the CCNA, and you would have to take one test in order to get it. A few years ago however they decided to break up the CCNA exam in to two different exams so that it would be easier for students just getting into the networking field to obtain their CCNA. The two exams are the ICND1 and INCD2 test. The cool thing is that when you pass the ICND1 exam you still get a certification. While it is not the CCNA it is a CCENT, which stands for Cisco Certified Entry Network Technician. Read more…

Introduction To How Routers Work For The CCENT Exam

Routers are a very important networking devices and without them the Internet wouldn’t exist. One good thing about getting your Cisco Certification is that a majority of the routers that run the Internet are made by Cisco. In other words there is going to be a demand for Cisco Certified Network Associates for a long time. I would even say that routers are more important to study about than switches for the ICND1 Exam because knowing how a router works requires knowledge about IP Addresses, subnetting, and routing protocols which are all important topics on the ICND1 Exam. Learn About IP Addresses For The CCENT Exam

Every router and computer on the network has to have an IP Address. The best way to understand how IP Addresses work is to think about how the postal service works. Every house has a unique address, a street name and a house number. There can be multiple house numbers on one street, and there can be houses with the same number as long as they are on different streets. Just like a house address as two different parts an IP Address also has two different parts to it, a network part and a host part. Read more…

Assigning IP Address to a class is called classful addressing. ARIN – American Registry for Internet Numbers manages the allocation of addresses. There are five different types of classes: Class A, Class B, Class C, Class D, & Class E. Read more…

CCENT Exam: Classless Inter-Domain Routing

Classless Inter-Domain Routing or CIDR for short has helped solve many problems that has helped delay the complete exhaustion of usable IPv4 IP Addresses for Internet use. This delay allowed enough time for IPv6 to be created, but CIDR has far outlived its original lifespan of 3-5 years back in 1992 because IPv4 is still heavily used today. Read more…

Learn About The OSI Model For The CCENT Exam

The OSI Model was created in 1984 because in the early 1980′s there were many companies producing different types of networking technologies. Networks during this time were increasing very rapidly and many problems began to arise when networks from different vendors could not talk to one another. By following the OSI Model networks created by different vendors can now communicate with one another. Read more…

Learn About The Transport Layer For The CCENT Exam

There are two protocols that operate in the transport layer: TCP and UDP. TCP Is reliable and connection oriented, breaks data into segments, numbers the segments through sequencing, assembles the segments at the destination, and re-sends segments if lost. UDP is connectionless and does not verify. UDP just sends the data and hopes it gets there. Read more…

Configuring an IP Address on a Cisco Router

To program a Cisco router we are going to use a Command Line Interface or CLI. Basically what that means is there is no pretty user interface with graphics and buttons, we will just be typing commands. The good thing about using a CLI is that once you get past the initial learning curve you can accomplish a lot more in less time. Read more…

How To Subnet A Range of IP Addresses For The CCENT Exam

Subnetting is a very important topic for both the ICND1 and ICND2 exam and is also needed to know in order to be a good network administrator. Subnetting can be a topic difficult to understand at first, but with practice it can become automatic and easy to do. Read more…

My Friends NAT and PAT

I have talked previously about ways to delay the huge problem of running out of unique IPv4 IP Addresses by using CIDR and Subnetting. IPv6 has so far solved the problem by offering way more than enough usable IP Addresses, but getting everything transitioned over to IPv6 will take a long time, so IPv4 is still heavily in use today and  is important to know for the ICND1 Exam.
