The following will describe several things to keep in mind when designing a Local Area Network.
A flat network has many disadvantages:
- All devices share the same bandwidth
- All devices share the same layer 2 broadcast domain
- It is difficult to apply security polocies
Some of the advantages of subnetting:
- Smaller networks are easier to manage
- Overall network traffic is reduced which can increase performance
- Makes it easier to apply security measures
The subnet mask tells you what part of the IP Address is the host and which part is the network
